Community Access Points
Each CAP deployment contains a Cisco 6503 switch with 16 10 Gb/s and 24 1 Gb/s fiber optic ports which can handle both layer 2 and layer 3 services. Each switch can interconnect with a maximum of 39 members, 15 at 10 Gb/s ad 24 at 1 Gb/s, with 1 10 Gb/s port allocated for uplink purposes. There will be cases wherein a CAP switch has more than 1 uplink port, typically when it is bridging between the IX-NWWA and another CAP. In addition to the switch, each CAP contains a UPS, wireless access points, and a terminal server for remote access and troubleshooting purposes.
As a CAP grows in size beyond the capacity of a single switch, another can be added and integrated with the 1st or depending on growth, may be replaced with a 6509 similar to what exists in the IX-NWWA. The use of these components, which are extremely reliable and readily available, provides for a stable environment with minimal hardware outages.
